Professional Journey
AI expert, computational linguist and researcher
Principal Key Expert in Artificial Intelligence
Siemens AG, 2020 - present
I have successfully developed projects from proof of concept to production deployment, specializing in engineering complex NLP pipelines for tasks such as text classification, information extraction, sentiment analysis, and search engine optimization. Additionally, I excel in organizing training sessions and informational workshops, and providing technical supervision for junior data scientists. In leadership roles, I define product visions that align with business objectives and stakeholder needs, leading cross-functional teams of developers. I also consult with customers on implementing AI-based solutions and have organized training sessions for C-level executives and employees, focusing on Generative AI using Azure OpenAI Services. Furthermore, I have a strong track record of implementing production-ready applications leveraging Azure Cloud services such as ML endpoints, AI search capabilities, and App Services.
NLP Specialist and Product Owner
BMW AG, 2018 - 2020
I have led a machine translation initiative focusing on technical automotive translation. I have implemented the machine translation system from training to bringing it to production. I have utilized NVidia GPUs for training large language models and AWS Cloud for deploying the trained models. Additionally, I successfully implemented conversational AI solutions to enhance user interaction. Furthermore, I organized and conducted a specialized NLP training program for BMW employees.
Research Scientist in NLP
ACoLi Lab, Goethe University Frankfurt, 2013 - 2017
I conducted research on machine translation and text normalization for low-resource languages, where I also explored language modeling, word embeddings, and neural networks. In addition, I developed RDF ontologies to enhance data interoperability. Furthermore, I designed and delivered a practical course on machine translation, integrating these advanced techniques to provide learners with essential hands-on skills.
Research Scientist in NLP
UKP Lab, Darmstadt University of Technology, 2015 - 2017
I oversaw and implemented the Amazon Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing data collection projects. I also led the design and implementation of Apache Spark Deep Learning pipelines for argumentation mining. Additionally, I specialized in constructing NLP processing pipelines within the UIMA framework in Java.
Research Scientist in NLP
Text Technology Lab, Goethe University Frankfurt 2011- 2012
I developed NLP pipelines specifically tailored for low-resource languages. My efforts included the automatic extraction of key phrases, which enhanced the understanding and processing of texts in these languages. Additionally, I created JavaScript and Java modules designed to be integrated into an online text management system, improving its functionality and efficiency. To learn more about my research back then, you can read my article on language detection in Latin.
M.Sc. in Language Science and Technology
University of Saarland, 2008 - 2011
I was awarded a full scholarship from DAAD to participate in the master's program, where I had the privilege of learning about AI, NLP and linguistics from top experts, including Martin Kay, Manfred Pinkal, Wolfgang Wahlster and Hans Uszkoreit, who supervised my thesis "Toward Implementation of Russian Agreement Phenomena in HPSG".
